Red Abalone
This quilt depicts the red abalone, a type of sea snail that is native to the coastal waters of
Northern California. Diving for abalone is a local tradition, and one of my personal hobbies.
When I began diving almost 10 years ago, the abalone were abundant, but environmental
changes over the past few years have caused their numbers to decline. The abalone fishery was
closed in 2018 to allow the population to recover. This quilt is a tribute to a beautiful creature
that I am hoping will make a full recovery.
Each abalone shown on the quilt is life size. When the fishery is open, an abalone must be at
least 7 inches long to be legally harvested. The center abalone is about 8.5 inches.
